The role
of both national and state data in arthritis surveillance will be
discussed in this section. The
National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is the source
of data for estimating national arthritis prevalence. The
Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is the source of data for estimating state arthritis prevalence. We will refer to
NHIS and BRFSS throughout this section. We will also refer to the specific
BRFSS questions used for arthritis
surveillance since 1996.
