These brocaded silk shoes exemplify the beautiful and elaborate accessories that were part of the fashionable eighteenth-century wardrobe. Since they were not suitable for walking out-of-doors, clogs or pattens -- separate wooden or leather soles -- were strapped on over the shoes when necessary.
