Postdoc Eligibility
Candidates may be considered for a postdoctoral position within five years of receiving their Ph.D. and the Postdoc Program Office submission deadlines corresponding to the quarterly meeting being proposed, or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment. Requests for exceptions will be considered based on extenuating circumstances.
A candidate may be reconsidered "one" additional time, if unsuccessful the first time reviewed for a "Postdoctoral Fellow" appointment or within "one" year of the initial hire date and the Postdoc Program Office submission deadlines corresponding to the quarterly meeting being re-proposed.
A candidate may be reconsidered "one" additional time, if unsuccessful the first time reviewed for a "Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow" appointment or within "two" years of the initial hire date and the Postdoc Program Office submission deadlines corresponding to the quarterly meeting being re-proposed.
Individuals who have conducted a significant portion of their doctoral thesis research at the Laboratory, as a GRA or other type of appointment, need to pursue a research project that shows substantial changes in topic/direction. If the proposed postdoctoral research is similar to the research the candidate did while a student at the Laboratory, the candidate may be ineligible for a LANL postdoctoral appointment. This guidance ensures that the Postdoctoral appointment significantly broadens the overall research experience and outlook of the candidate. The Postdoctoral Committee considers factors such as:
- substantial change in research topic/direction,
- change in Laboratory advisors, and/or sponsoring organization,
- the extent to which thesis research direction was provided by Laboratory staff, and
- length of graduate residence at the Laboratory.
