The National Survey on Children’s Health:
A New Data Resource for the MCH Community
Wednesday, September 21, 2005, 2-3 p.m., ET

Overview

The National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH) is an important new data resource for maternal and child health programs and providers, policy makers, researchers, and advocates working to improve children’s health and well-being. Sponsored by the Federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) in partnership with the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), the survey was designed to address the paucity of reliable and representative State- and national-level estimates regarding children’s health and their experiences in the health care system in the context of their families and communities. The availability of this data will greatly enhance the ability of Title V programs to carry out their needs assessment, planning, and evaluation responsibilities.

In this DataSpeak program, officials from the MCHB and NCHS will describe the purpose of the survey, its design, and the methodology used to collect the data. A professor at the Institute for Health Policy Studies, University of California at San Francisco will provide an overview of survey findings. In addition, the Director of the Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative will acquaint participants with the National Survey of Children’s Health Data Resource Center, an online tool for easily accessing, analyzing, and learning about findings from this and other important surveys. An opportunity to pose questions to the presenters also will be offered.
