New Findings on Health Behaviors of School-aged Children, December 3, 2008, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. EST (1:00 – 2:00 p.m. CST, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. MST, 11:00 – 12:00 p.m. PST) OverviewThe Health Resources and Services Administration’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) is pleased to announce this upcoming DataSpeak Web conference presenting selected findings from the recently released 2005–2006 Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey. Started in 1982, the HBSC is a periodic survey conducted every 4 years by 43 countries in collaboration with the World Health Organization. The U.S. portion of the survey has been funded by the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the MCHB. The goal of the survey is to enhance understanding of young people’s health and well-being, health behaviors, and social context and thus inform and influence national and international health promotion and health education policy and practice. The survey is school-based, with children aged 11, 13, and 15 years completing written questionnaires. Core categories of questions include background factors, individual and social resources, health behaviors, and health outcomes. Selected findings from the 2005–2006 survey will be presented by two U.S.-based HBSC researchers from the National Institutes of Health. Ronald Iannotti, PhD, of the NICHD, will provide a brief overview of HBSC and will present findings related to obesity, physical activity, and bullying. He will also present comparisons of findings for U.S. youth versus other nations. Bruce Simons-Morton, EdD, MPH, Chief of the Prevention Research Branch at NICHD, will discuss survey findings on substance use. This will include a discussion of alcohol and marijuana policies across selected countries, prevalence data for use of certain substances, and a brief presentation of other planned analyses using HBSC substance use data. |
