The mission for VAPHS is to care for America's veterans by providing excellent health care, training their future providers, and advancing medical knowledge through research. VAPHS also has the distinction of being awarded for National Centers of Excellence:

Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP) develops and supports research, education, policy making, and dissemination that focuses on disparities related to race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and comorbid illness in patients with conditions prevalent in the veteran population, such as cardiovascular disease, HIV, and alcohol and substance abuse;

Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) facilitate research to investigate barriers to care in the elderly in an effort to determine why therapies that are known to be effective are not uniformly applied;

Mental Illness Research Education Clinical Center (MIRECC) is a national VA research program focused on mental health care, and the VISN 4 MIRECC focuses specifically on comorbid general medical, mental health, and/or substance use disorders;

Wheelchairs and Associated Rehabilitation Engineering (WARE) and the Human Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL), a part of WARE, seek to continuously improve the mobility and function of people with disabilities through advanced engineering in clinical research and medical rehabilitation.

VAPHS has research activities involving
more than 123 investigators. Major disciplines are represented in over 260 projects. Major research emphasis includes clinical trials, clinical science research, health services research, rehabilitation research and related technologies, basic science, and animal research.

In FY 2006, VAPHS received approximately 24 million dollars in research funding from VA Health Services and Research, National Institutes of Health (NIH), private funding sources, and various pharmaceutical companies.
