Visitor Center Itineraries

You are not required to use these itineraries.  They are meant  to serve as planning tools to provide you with realistic timeframe's and a range of lesson plans to maximize your students experience at Mount St. Helens.  The timelines for all itineraries are based on typical arrival times to the Johnston Ridge Observatory--10:00, 10:30, 11:00 or 11:30.

Begin by selecting the itinerary that meets your timeframe and the content areas you desire to teach. When you open an itinerary review each student activity.  Each activity includes goals and objectives, instructional sequences, student worksheets and answer sheets. Download or print a copy of the itinerary and the student activities you are interested in.  Remember, it is better to do less and spend quality time at a site than to cram too much into a single day.  Think quality, not quantity.

  •  Elementary school itineraries are designed for 4th and 5th grade students
  •  Middle school itineraries are designed for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.

The permanent closure of the Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center has made it essential to spread students out in order not to overwhelm the Johnston Ridge site.  As a result there are now itineraries that include a variety of activities at the Coldwater Lake Recreation Area, as well as a few lessons on the Hummocks Trail.  The Hummocks Trail is located within a sensitive research area--group size should NOT exceed 30 students.  Student behavior at this site will determine if it will remain open to school groups in the future.  It is your responsiblity to ensure future access.  The collection of rocks, wood or plants, off trail travel, and tampering with research equipment is strictly prohibited.
