Trail of Two Forest Crawl

"The Crawl."
Forest Service photograph by Todd Cullings

  • Open Year Round (Access difficult from November to mid-April)
  • Northwest Forest Pass required ($5)
  • Crawl through lava casts

Located just three-fourths of a mile from Ape Cave, this trail winds through casts of the remains of an ancient forest. Nineteen-hundred years ago, basalt lava devoured the trees that once stood here and left their ghostly signatures. Discover how lava leaves casts and determine the number of tree casts that make up "the crawl", a 45-foot tunnel.
