For each pediatric specialty, county
level files were created to calculate
the distance between each county in the
United States and the nearest specialists
using latitude and longitude data from
the HRSA Bureau of Health Professions
Area Resource File (ARF) and physician
data from the ABP. 78
Population-level data from the Bureau
of the Census were merged to the distance
data for each county in the United States.
Using pediatric population as a weight,
the average population-weighted distance
to the nearest provider was calculated
for each specialty.

For each pediatric subspecialty distance
measure, counties were then classified
as being within 10 miles, 11 to 50 miles,
51 to 100 miles, 101 to 200 miles, or
200 or more miles of a provider. These
estimates assess the percentage of the
population that experiences a substantial
geographic barrier to care.
