For immediate release.

Yreka, CA (October 3, 2008)...Fire officials on the Klamath National Forest report that the Panther Fire, located 15 miles south of Happy Camp, has experienced an increase in activity due to winds that came through the area beginning October 1, 2008. As of this date, the fire has moved approximately six miles northeast through the Elk Creek drainage. Firefighters are currently gathering information on a spot fire in Grider Valley. Additional firefighting resources have been moved to the area to secure fire lines needed to contain the active fire front.

Fire activity is moderate due to increased moisture and cloud cover, but officials explain that fire behavior could change depending on developing conditions. Ken Harris, Happy Camp and Oak Knoll District Ranger, urges all hunters in the area to exercise extreme caution and to be aware of their situation at all times. He said, “Until we get significant rain, there will always be a potential for this fire to grow in size. Hunters, hikers and others visiting in the forest need to be especially cautious during the coming weeks.”

Fire managers expect it will be mid to late October before all fires within the Klamath National Forest are completely contained and controlled. The Panther Fire began with a lightning strike on July 22, 2008. It is estimated to be 82 per cent contained.

Visitors are reminded to remain on authorized roads, and to drive safely as fire crews are traveling and working in the fire area. The forest visitor map showing National Forest roads, trails and areas designated for public motor vehicle use are available at all Forest Service offices. Please contact the Klamath National Forest Supervisors Office at 530-841-4451 for more information and closure updates.
