Yesterday was a successful day for fire crews as all containment lines held and burn out operations proceeded according to plan.  Temperatures were mitigated by smoke that was hanging close to the valley and shading the vegetation.  Weather patterns are returning to “normal” levels for this area and at this time of year.  It will still be very hot and dry with no foreseeable rain in the forecast, so fire managers are planning for the long-term management of this complex.

Burnout operations will continue today south of Offield Mountain with the objective of securing the recently constructed fire line by igniting the fine fuels and brush below the line to create a wider fire line.  It has been too smoky recently to utilize helicopters dropping water that could further support a burn out operation.

Line scouts are working way in advance of the fire crews planning for future fire line locations along strategic ridges and roads.  Safety officers are also planning for safe exit routes if they are needed.  Roads are being prepared for travel after many years without maintenance and brushing.  Danger trees and snags are being felled along travel and work routes to be used later this summer in support of the fire suppression efforts.

A closure remains in effect for the Salmon River Road to the general public.  Local residents and firefighters will be allowed to travel this road with restrictions.  Roads near the fire are extremely smoky and caution and common sense are urged when travelling near Somes Bar.  Heavy equipment, fire fighting engines, and fire fighters are on or near the roads.  Please drive slow, with your headlights on, when travelling on Hwy 96 and the Salmon River Road.
