Trial Description

Purpose:

Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as gemcitabine, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving gemcitabine directly into the bladder after surgery may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known whether giving gemcitabine directly into the bladder is more effective than a placebo in treating bladder cancer.

This randomized phase III trial is studying gemcitabine to see how well it works when given directly into the bladder compared with a placebo after surgery in treating patients with newly diagnosed or recurrent bladder cancer.

Eligibility:

Eligibility criteria include the following:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Planning to undergo surgery within 10 days
  • More than 6 months since therapy given directly into the bladder
  • For more information about the eligibility criteria for this trial, refer to the Health Professional version.

Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial.

Treatment/Intervention:

Patients will be randomly assigned (have an equal chance of being placed) to one of two treatment groups.

All patients will undergo transurethral resection of the bladder tumor.

Within 3 hours after surgery, patients in group one will receive a 1-hour infusion of gemcitabine into the bladder.

Within 3 hours after surgery, patients in group two will receive a 1-hour infusion of a placebo into the bladder.

Patients will undergo urine collection at the beginning of the study and every 3 months for 2 years for laboratory studies.

After finishing treatment, patients will be evaluated every 3 months for 2 years and every 6 months for 2 years.

Important:

For more details about this trial, refer to the Health Professional version of the trial summary.
