Missing climbers reunited with family
MOUNT SHASTA, Calif. – Family, friends and search crews are rejoicing this morning after Patricia Giamoni of Apex, N.C. and Salvador Frias of Millbrae, Calif., walked out of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest after first calling for helps more than 48 hours earlier.
"We can’t ask for a better outcome," said Incident Commander, Deputy Ken Richardson of the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department. "They're safe and that's what matters."
With the help of helicopters, ATVs and wilderness experts, as many as 100 searchers have scoured the trails and rugged backcountry terrain since Saturday evening.
On Monday there were 44 searchers on the ground and in the air looking for these two missing people, according to Richardson.
The couple embarked on a summit climb of 14,162 foot Mount Shasta in northern California Saturday. A massive search began when Frias called 911 indicating they were in trouble and needed mountain rescue.
The couple was found just before midnight outside the forest's boundary on the northwestern side. They walked out under their own steam, into the Roseburg Lumber Mill in the city of Weed, Calif.
They contact the authorities and were transported to Mercy Medical Center Mount Shasta, where they are currently being evaluated.
