Wildlife of the Shasta Trinity National Forest

Close up photograph of three wood ducks, in a line, on a pond. Two males and one female with the water rippling as they slowly paddle.

Photograph of a steep brush covered ridge. There are a few scattered trees on the slope side with a line of conifers along the top. Blue sky is above the ridge.

Photograph of a deer with it's head down, feeding, on a flat portion of the lake draw down zone. The area had been previously seeded.

Photograph of a pond with feathered edges. Surrounding the pond is an open area with many pine trees, sparse grass and open ground. The trees and the ridge beyond are reflected in the calm pond water surface.

Historical land management activities in California and on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest have created changes to the ecosystems. Any change in an ecosystem creates hardships for some species while creating favorable conditions for other species. The categories above are a few examples of how land managers try to balance the increasing human demands on the ecosystems with the requirements of existing wildlife.
