Goal 3: Ensuring Interdisciplinary Training

Improve practice through interdisciplinary training in MCH.

Strategies:

• Improve the quality of interdisciplinary training
• Increase opportunities for interdisciplinary training

Rationale:

The MCH Training program has a long track record of focusing significant training resources on interdisciplinary training because we believe that the leaders of the future will need to take an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach if they are to develop new paths to solve difficult problems.

Current interdisciplinary MCH Training Program investments include:  Leadership Education in Adolescent Health (LEAH), Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND), Pediatric Pulmonary Centers (PPC), and Schools of Public Health (SPH).  These programs provide interdisciplinary leadership training to graduate and post-graduate professionals from a wide variety of professionals.  Each year the four programs sponsor a Joint Interdisciplinary Training Program meeting.

Definitions:

• Interdisciplinary: Collaboration in which two or more academic disciplines work together in pursuit of common goals.
• Interdisciplinary training: an integrated education program involving the interdependent contributions of the knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, and methods of the collaborating disciplines. Interdisciplinary Training Guide, National Training Directors Council, AUCD, November 2001
