A crowd watches captive crew members of the mutinied slave ship, Amistad. In 1839 Fifty-three Africans were abducted and put on a Cuban schooner, the Amistad, intended for delivery as slaves to a Caribbean plantation. While in route the crew mutinied and took over the ship killing the crew. They were arrested off Long Island and imprisoned in New Haven, Connecticut. The case eventually went to the Supreme Court and the former President John Quincy Adams argued the defendant's case. The Supreme Court decided in favor of the Africans, and 35 of them were returned to their homeland. Joseph Cinquez was the leader of the Africans. The image was produced after a sketch by Irving L.
