President Clinton Urges Passage of Supplemental to Help Hurricane Floyd Victims

Washington, DC -- President Clinton urged Congress to pass the supplemental budget request in order to provide more assistance to families and communities hit by Hurricane Floyd flooding. Clinton's comments came during a White House press conference held on March 29.
"This is urgent funding for pressing needs at home and abroad - to help the families that were victims of Hurricane Floyd, to provide needed energy assistance for families struggling to cope with rising oil prices, to help keep illegal drugs out of our nation by supporting the Colombian government's courageous fight against drug traffickers, to keep the peace, provide for our troops, and build stability in Kosovo, and to provide needed debt relief to the world's poorest nations," President Clinton said.
The budget supplemental would provide an additional $77 million to buy out property at risk for future flooding. The funding would be added to the $215 million already allocated by Congress for additional buyouts beyond FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
Hurricane Floyd brought flooding to more than a dozen states stretching from Florida to New England last fall. In some communities, whole neighborhoods were inundated by the hurricane's flood waters.
