Katrina Disaster Aid to Alabama Surpasses $516 Million 

Individuals and Families Receive $117 Million

MONTGOMERY , Ala. -- Federal and state officials announced that disaster aid to Alabama has topped $516 million in assistance to help in its recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

"As we continue to provide funds for individuals and families, and for public assistance projects and SBA loans, we will see Alabama 's recovery steadily improving," said Michael Bolch, federal coordinating officer for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Bruce Baughman, the Alabama state coordinating officer said, "The Hurricane dealt us quite a blow--although we realize it could have been worse. Our residents and business owners are anxious to get back to normal and with the help of the federal government we are on our way to that goal."

Alabama disaster assistance to date includes:

AN IMPORTANT REMINDER:

Evacuees in hotels and motels in Alabama must contact FEMA by January 30 at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), (TTY 1-800-462-7585), to receive an authorization code that must be presented to a hotel or motel to extend their hotel stay beyond the night of Feb 6, 2006. FEMA payments for hotel or motel rooms will end on February 7 for those evacuees who do not contact FEMA for an authorization code. The code is also required for evacuees who change hotels or who are checking in for the first time between now and January 30.

Katrina survivors who have not yet registered for assistance must do so before the extended deadline of March 11 th . Applicants may also register online at www.fema.gov .
