Syracuse, NY -- Federal disaster assistance has been expanded to include six additional counties for public assistance in the wake of the severe April 3-5 ice storm, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and New York State disaster officials announced today. Federal funds will be provided for eligible government entities and certain private non-profit organizations in Livingston, Madison, Orleans, Otsego, Schenectady and Seneca counties.

"The additional assistance was approved following a review of damage data gathered by emergency management officials," said Marianne C. Jackson, federal coordinating officer.

On May 12, President Bush signed a major disaster declaration authorizing federal disaster assistance, after a request from Governor George E. Pataki. Federal funds have already been triggered for the state and affected local governments in the counties of Cayuga, Chenango, Monroe, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Oswego, Wayne and Yates to pay 75 percent of the approved costs for debris removal, emergency services related to the storm, and the restoration of damaged public facilities.

Edward F. Jacoby, Jr., state coordinating officer and director of the State Emergency Management Office, announced that applicant briefings would be scheduled in the six newly designated counties within a week.

The President's major disaster declaration also triggered aid to homeowners, renters and business owners in the counties of Cayuga, Monroe, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Oswego, Seneca and Wayne who were affected by the ice storm. They can apply for disaster assistance by first calling the Teleregistration/Helpline, 1-800-621-FEMA. Hearing and/or speech impaired individuals can call 1-800-462-7585 (TTY).
