West Virginia Recovery Assistance Tops $33.7 Million

Charleston, WV -- West Virginia residents who have been ravaged by several floods over the past three months have received $33.7 million in state and federal disaster recovery assistance to begin rebuilding their lives.
Through Thursday, the Federal Emergency Management Agencys (FEMA) toll-free registration numbers had received 11,238 applications for assistance. Those numbers are 1-800-462-9029 and TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing-impaired.
Two more counties, Greenbrier and Nicholas, were added during the week to the 22 already declared by the President as disaster areas dating back to June 3.
Assistance to individuals, families and business owners:
- $2.9 million in Individual and Family Grants have been approved for 693 families.
- The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved $6.5 million in low-interest loans.
- More than $18.7 million in disaster housing has been approved.
- Eight Disaster Recovery Centers are open, five fixed and three mobile.
- Disaster Unemployment Assistance is available and $6,920 in claims have been paid.
- Application deadline: Sept. 8.
- Meals served: 406,933 .
- Combined federal/state assistance for debris removal and infrastructure repair: $5.6 million.
- Eighty travel trailers and 20 mobile homes have arrived at staging areas to provide temporary housing
Residents who have suffered flood- and mudslide-damage in 24 West Virginia counties may apply for disaster recovery assistance.
The declared counties are Boone, Cabell, Calhoun, Clay, Doddridge, Fayette, Greenbrier, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Marion, Mason, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Nicholas, Preston, Putnam, Raleigh, Roane, Summers, Taylor, Wayne and Wyoming.
To apply for assistance, those who suffered losses must call those toll-free FEMA registration numbers, 1-800-462-9029, or, for those with speech or hearing impairments, 1-800-462-7585.
Already, more than 11,000 West Virginians have applied for assistance. More than 3,000 have visited the FEMA and West Virginia Office of Emergency Services Disaster Recovery Centers.
