MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Alabama residents who suffered damages from Hurricane Katrina in disaster-declared counties have until March 11 to apply for federal-state disaster assistance, officials from the Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said Tuesday.
"The deadline was extended 60 days at the state's request. If you have not yet registered, we urge you to do so. If you were affected by Katrina, you may be eligible for any one of several programs available to help registered applicants," said Michael Bolch, FEMA's federal coordinating officer.
Individuals may be eligible for assistance if they suffered uninsured losses in any of the eleven counties designated under the federal disaster declaration. The counties are Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Greene, Hale, Marengo, Mobile, Pickens, Sumter, Tuscaloosa and Washington.
Disaster assistance may include funding for temporary disaster housing assistance; U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans for individuals and business owners to repair or replace real or personal property; grants to help meet serious disaster-related needs and expenses not covered by insurance or other assistance programs.
The toll-free teleregistration number is 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585 for those with speech or hearing impairment. Both lines are open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Operators are available to speak with callers in several languages. Those who have already registered may call this number to check on the status of their application. Have your file number handy when you call. You may also register on the web at www.fema.gov.
To date, over 114,000 individuals have registered for assistance in Alabama, resulting in awards over $115.1 million in individual assistance and over $45.8 million in SBA disaster loans.
