ALBANY, N.Y. -- State and federal officials announce that the New York county of Chautauqua is now eligible for Public Assistance under the October 1, 2004 declaration for the severe storms and flooding of August 29 through September 16.

FEMA pays 75 percent of the approved project cost. Examples of eligible expenses are as follows:

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security‘s Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) Federal Coordinating Officer Theodore Monette said the county was added based on data of the damage gathered by federal and state disaster recovery officials.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
