A Perfect Storm for Socially Responsible Investing?

Thursday January 15, 2009

One of the silver linings of the current economic crisis is the potential for corporations around the globe to embrace corporate responsibility; and the reexamination by investors of their reasons for investing and of where they are investing.

My thanks to our Socially Responsible Investing Guide, William Donovan, for steering me to this article in GreenMoney Journal by Amy Domini, a star of the SRI field. Domini thinks that the outlook for SRI over the next 15 years is very good:

"Years ago I spoke of the need for social investors to enter 'into the belly of the beast,' to use the awesome power of the financial services industry to make possible a world of universal human dignity and ecological sustainability.

Today this is actually happening: Sell-side firms like Citigroup, UBS, and Société Générale are beginning to incorporate coverage of environmental, social and corporate governance issues with their traditional financial analysis, and to recognize that these factors can have real impact on a company's long-term profitability."

Can a Non-Golfing Fundraiser Pull Off a Golf Tournament?

Wednesday January 14, 2009

This is the high season for fundraisers who are planning golf tournaments.

Lest you think golf is just a side line for fundraisers, consider these facts from the National Golf Foundation:

  • Some 140,000 charity tournaments are run each year.
  • 15 million players participate.
  • Charity tournaments raise $3 billion for charitable causes each year.

If you want to get in on the act, or just improve your performance, you'll want to get Tom King's new book, Going for the Green!: An Insider's Guide to Raising Money with Charity Golf.

This small but packed little book from Emerson&Church wastes no time in providing clear tips and checklists to make your golf tournament a success.

Not a golfer? King says you need to know two things about golf to get started with your own charity golf tournament: the name and phone number of the golf pro at your golf course, and that you should let him or her handle all the golf details.

All the rest you can get from this handy book, from what format to choose, to how to pull together your volunteer team and choose a leader, to sample sponsorships and budgets, to marketing and sales.

Going for the Green is step-by-step advice at its best, and by a veteran tournament organizer and former development officer.

Yes, the fundraising outlook and the economic picture are not the brightest this year, but methinks those golf addicts will still be looking for opportunities to play.
