North Fork Mitigation Proposals (November 10)—A proposal to
purchase a permanent conservation easement that would protect crucial
winter range in the North Fork Corridor tops the list of ideas submitted
for wildlife mitigation on the North Fork of the Shoshone River.

ambitious multi-pronged effort to reduce the threat of devastating wildfires

Using Good Weather Window for Prescribed Burns (October 7)—Warm,
dry fall weather and light winds are proving a boon for Shoshone National
Forest fire crews. Over the past two weeks, crews have been busy setting
a number of prescribed burns – controlled fires that reduce dangerous
buildups of fuels and improve wildlife habitat.

Improving Campground Water Systems (September 16)—The Shoshone
National Forest has made good progress in the past few weeks in improving
campground water systems, according to Gary Reynolds, recreation program
manager.

Plans Burns to Reduce Fuel Loading, Improve Wildlife Habitat and Vegetation
(September 12)—The Wind River Ranger District on the Shoshone
National Forest is planning a 1,200-acre prescribed burn in the Wayne’s
Hole area Northwest of Dubois this fall.

Opens Closed Areas to Travel (September 10)—Areas that were
closed to public travel in the Crow Creek, Fishhawk and Blackwater drainages
and the Boulder Basin area due to wildfires are now open according to
Wapiti District Ranger Dave Sisk.
- Cody
Man Fined for Driving in Wilderness (September 10)—Robert
Bruce of Cody was fined $100 for driving a motorized vehicle in the
North Absaroka Wilderness Area.
- Forest
Lifts Fire Restrictions, Announces Fall Campground Schedules (September
09)—Due to cooler and wetter weather, all fire restrictions on
the Shoshone National Forest have been lifted according to Fire Management
Officer Rick Connell. Restrictions had been in place on the northern
half of the forest since August 23 due to extreme fire danger brought
on by hot, dry weather.
- Greybull
Drainage Trails Reopen to Hunters and Others (August 26)—The
upper Greybull River Drainage from the Jack Creek Trailhead and side
drainages including Venus Creek, Anderson Creek, Eleanor Creek, Warhouse
Creek, Betty Creek and Piney Creek are now open to travel by hunters,
hikers and others.
- Forest Implements Area Closures Due to Fire Activity (August 22) - Additional closures were put in place yesterday for the Shoshone National Forest due to active fires in extreme fire conditions.
- Forest Service, Wyoming Game and Fish Looking for North Fork Mitigation Alternatives (August 19) - At a recent public meeting regarding the mitigation money that is available due to the reconstruction of the North Fork highway, Shoshone National Forest and Wyoming Game and Fish officials agreed to continue to accept alternative proposals for the funds.
- Crews Continue Battling Norris Fire, Respond to Two New Blazes (August 18) - As smoke blanketed Cody and the surrounding area over the weekend, firefighters continued to battle the Norris Fire and two more lightning-caused blazes on the Shoshone National Forest.
- Fires Close Two Forest Trails (August 15) - The Shoshone National Forest has closed the Fishhawk and Crow Creek drainages to all public travel due to wildfires in those areas and concerns for public safety. Both drainages are located off the North Fork Corridor between Cody and the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park.
- Lightning Starts More Fires on Forest (August 13) - Firefighter crews were sent scrambling as lightning strikes started eight more fires on the Shoshone National Forest.
- Local Communities Receive Forest Service Grants (August 12) - Communities and nonprofit organizations in Park and Fremont Counties have received seven Forest Service Rural Community Assistance (RCA) and National Fire Plan (NFP) grants totaling $39,600, according to Shoshone National Forest Supervisor Becky Aus.
- Meeting Set to Discuss Wildlife Mitigation in North Fork Corridor (August 7) - A meeting to discuss long-term wildlife mitigation in the North Fork Corridor will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 14 at the Bighorn Federal Bank, 1701 Stampede in Cody.
- Forest, Commissioners Work Together to Develop Food Storage Order (August 7) - The Shoshone National Forest is working with Fremont County Commissioners to address a number of concerns about a proposed bear food storage order and to modify the order so that it will help protect people and bears and at the same time be workable and enforceable.
- Comment Period Extended on Grizzly Bear Habitat Amendment (August 7) - The comment period for the Grizzly Bear Habitat Amendments has been extended by 18 days until September 2 in response to requests from the public.
- Wapiti Campground to Close for Reconstruction (August 4) - Wapiti Campground was closed for reconstruction last week and will remain closed through the remainder of the year and into 2004 when the work is expected to be completed.
- Forest Plan Amendment to Promote Continued Recovery of Grizzly Bear (July 22) - The U.S. Forest Service is proposing to amend forest plans for six national forests in the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA) to provide direction for managing grizzly bear habitat, developed sites, and livestock grazing within the Grizzly Bear Recovery Area when the grizzly bear is removed from protection under the Endangered Species Act.
- Fire Lines Extended on Deep Lake Fire; Overhead Team, New Crews Arrive (July 20) - The Deep Lake Fire grew to approximately 6,000 acres Saturday night as 20 mile-per-hour winds pushed flames to the south and the fire slopped over a dozer line on the northeast corner.
- Deep Lake Fire doubles in size as winds fan flames (July 19) - Down canyon winds fanned flames of the Deep Lake Fire Friday afternoon more than doubling its size to over 5,500 acres.
- Deep Lake Fire Remains Active under Hot, Dry Conditions (July 18) - The Deep Lake Fire on the Clarks Fork District of the Shoshone National Forest
has grown to approximately 2,300 acres, and firefighters saw some torching Thursday
night when flames ran up a drainage on the south-facing slope of the fire.
- Deep Lake Fire Burning on the Shoshone National Forest (July 17) - The Deep Lake Fire, approximately 35 miles northwest of Cody, Wyoming and 6
miles west of Clark, Wyoming, was reported Wednesday.
- Recreation Fee Demonstration Funds to Help
Improve Forest Services and Facilities (July 7) - The Shoshone National Forest will begin using fees collected from forest campgrounds
to improve services and maintain and upgrade its facilities under the Recreation
Fee Demonstration Program according to Recreation and Lands Program Manager
Gary Reynolds.

Wind River District Ranger (June 13) - Rick Metzger will become the new district ranger for the Wind River District
headquartered in Dubois, according to Shoshone National Forest Supervisor Becky

- Forest Seeks Public Help
to Heal Scars of Pass Creek Fire (May 23) - As the snow melts and summer approaches, four wheelers and other back road
travelers are being asked not to drive on some areas burned by the Pass Creek
fire in order to allow vegetation to grow and heal the burned over area.
- Encounters Between Bears and People Increase,
People Urged to be Bear Aware and Store Food (May 16) - Campers, hikers and others visiting the forest are being reminded to be aware
of bears and to store food and other attractants where bears can’t get
at them because the number of encounters between humans and bears has grown
substantially.
- Forest Forced to Close Water Systems at Some Recreation Sites (May 16) - Due to contamination in some of its aging water systems and a lack of funding
necessary to replace them, the Shoshone National Forest will no longer be able
to operate water systems in all 55 of its campgrounds and picnic areas according
to Forest Supervisor Becky Aus.

Forest boundary has been closed to vehicle traffic, Carter Mountain remains

- Illegal Snowmobile Trail Constructed on Forest ( Feb 8) - Someone constructing an unauthorized snowmobile trail near Fry Lake on the
Shoshone National Forest southwest of Lander has cut a large number of green
trees.
