HAZUS Publications
FEMA provides various HAZUS publications, including an informational video, free-of charge. The following publications and video can be ordered from the FEMA Publications Warehouse.
HAZUS-MH was used in the preparation of the Annualized Earthquake Loss, which estimates seismic risk in all regions of the United States by using two risk indicators:
1. Annualized Earthquake Loss (AEL), which is the estimated long-term value of earthquake losses to the general building stock in any single year in a specified geographic area; and
2. Annualized Earthquake Loss Ratio (AELR), which expresses estimated annualized loss as a fraction of the building inventory replacement value.
This study is an important contribution to our understanding of the earthquake risk in the United States, and in ongoing efforts to promote seismic safety through the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP).

FEMA 493 - HAZUS Annual Progress and Utilization Report for Fiscal Year 2004 (January 2004)
In fiscal year (FY) 2004, the HAZUS program made significant progress, including a major increase in utilization. The number of HAZUS users has nearly tripled during the past four years from an estimated 1,300 users in 2000 to an estimated 4,200 users in 2004. To arrive at these utilization figures, the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) conducted a market study and tracked distribution of the HAZUS application software. This report analyses the use of HAZUS.

FEMA 433 - Using HAZUS-MH for Risk Assessment (August 2004)
This How-To Guide is designed to help users prepare standardized, scientifically based risk assessments with the Hazards U.S. Multi-Hazard (HAZUS-MH) software. FEMA prepared this guide on the basis of field-implemented HAZUS-MH risk assessment pilot projects across the country that are responding to the requirements of the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA 2000). This guide is intended for users who have had exposure to HAZUS-MH and are interested in using the software to support risk assessment studies.
-
FEMA 411 - HAZUS Market Characterization Study (May 2002)
This study was designed to provide external, or "market pull," and internal, or "market push" analysis to better understand current and potential HAZUS users and their requirements and to provide a methodology and planning tool for developing training and projections for technical support. The findings of the market study will provide the basis for the formation of a HAZUS MH marketing strategy.

A Guide to Using HAZUS for Mitigation (April 2002)
A Guide to Using HAZUS for Mitigation describes how HAZUS can help your local community, county, region or state identify, develop and implement measures to accomplish effective earthquake hazard risk reduction. The Guide will assist you in using HAZUS to ask questions about your community's vulnerability to earthquake damage and how such losses might be reduced by implementing preventive (mitigative) actions. It will help you understand how to use HAZUS loss estimates to develop and implement an effective community mitigation plan.

FEMA 404 - How to Create a HAZUS User Group (April 2002)
How to Create a HAZUS User Group provides information to help you form hazard-specific or multi-hazard HAZUS User Groups and shares lessons learned from successful HAZUS User Groups across the country.
-
FEMA 249 - Assessment of the State-of-the-Art Earthquake Loss Estimation Methodologies (June 1994)
Assessment of the State-of-the-Art Earthquake Loss Estimation Methodologies is the summary of a comprehensive survey conducted to identify studies relevant to earthquake loss estimation, an evaluation of selected studies to determine their potential as components of a standardized methodology, the identification of gaps in the methodology components, and the development of recommendations for filling identified gaps.
