Drug Class: Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (tenofovir DF), also known as Viread, is a type of medicine called a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). NRTIs block reverse transcriptase, a protein that HIV needs to make more copies of itself. Tenofovir DF is also approved for the treatment of hepatitis B virus in adults.

HIV/AIDS-Related Uses

Tenofovir DF was approved by the FDA on October 26, 2001, for use in combination with other antiretroviral agents in the treatment of HIV infections in adults. This medicine does not cure or prevent HIV infection or AIDS and does not reduce the risk of passing the virus to other people.

Dosage Form/Administration

Tenofovir DF comes in tablet form and is taken by mouth.

Recommended Daily Dose

The recommended dose of tenofovir DF is 300 mg once a day. Individuals with decreased kidney function may need to take tenofovir DF less often. Some individuals may benefit from different doses of tenofovir DF. Individuals should always take tenofovir DF as prescribed by their doctors.
