  Free or Low-Cost Health Insurance
  Question
Does HRSA offer health insurance to people who can't afford to pay for private insurance?
  Answer

The Health Resources and Services Administration does not have a health insurance program, but HRSA-supported health centers provide health and dental care to people of all ages, whether or not they have health insurance or the money to pay for health care. Go to http://findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov to find the health center closest to you.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services administers three free or low-cost health insurance programs:

  • Medicare is for people age 65 and older. For information on Medicare, go to http://www.medicare.gov.
  • Medicaid is for certain individuals and families with low incomes and resources. Eligibility and benefits vary considerably from State to State. For more information about Medicaid, go to http://www.cms.hhs.gov/MedicaidGenInfo/01_Overview.asp#TopOfPage.
  • State Children's Health Insurance Program provides free or low-cost insurance for children in working families. For more information on SCHIP and to find your State's SCHIP Web site, go to  http://www.insurekidsnow.gov.

State High Risk Pool Health Insurance may be an option if you have a pre-existing health condition and cannot find affordable health insurance. Not all States have risk pool insurance plans and each State plan is different. For more information, contact your State Health Department or search the Web for [name of State where you live] risk pool health insurance.
