NIAID Clinical Research Transition Program

The NIAID Clinical Research Transition Program was initiated in 2006 to provide opportunities for physicians to gain clinical and translational research experience in association with an NIAID DIR laboratory. The program aims to increase the pool of well-trained clinical investigators who are competitive for clinical tenure-track positions.

New applications will be accepted in fall 2009.

  • One to three candidates per year will be selected for 3- to 5-year appointments.
  • Applicants must have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree, be board eligible or board certified in a subspecialty (or equivalent), and qualify for credentialing by the NIH Clinical Center.
  • Candidates should identify a DIR lab chief who will agree to host their research. Information about DIR labs and contact information for lab chiefs are available at http://www3.niaid.nih.gov/about/organization/dir/.
  • Applications will be evaluated by a search committee composed of NIAID DIR principal investigators with clinical research interests. Competitive candidates will be asked to present their research accomplishments and plans to the search committee.
  • The committee will also review participants' progress annually during their appointments. They will also be reviewed by the Board of Scientific Counselors at the end of their second year.
  • Participants will be paired with an NIAID senior clinical investigator who will serve as a clinical research mentor.
  • Starting salaries of approximately $120,000 per year, independent resources and staff will be provided.
  • Interested candidates may contact Dr. Karyl Barron, Deputy Director, DIR, NIAID, at 301-402-2208 or via e-mail (kbarron@nih.gov) for additional information or assistance in identifying an appropriate host lab.

How to Apply

E-mail your CV-Bib, an outline of your proposed research program (no more than two pages), and a letter of support from the accepting DIR lab chief to Wanda Jackson at NIAID.DIR.Search@niaid.nih.gov.
