Lacey, Wash. -- Federal and state officials announced today that six more Washington counties are now eligible for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Public Assistance (PA): Clallam, Jefferson, King, Skagit, Snohomish and Wahkiakum. This brings the total to 12 counties designated for PA for emergency and permanent repairs and restoration of public facilities.

Additionally, Grays Harbor, Kitsap, Lewis, Mason, Pacific and Thurston counties, which were previously designated for emergency protective measures and debris removal, are now also eligible for permanent repair or replacement of damaged public facilities such as roads, buildings and utilities, and repair or replacement of recreational facilities such as parks or playgrounds damaged by the storms.

Applicants' briefings will be held in the newly approved counties. Further information is available through the Washington Emergency Management Division Public Assistance Branch.

The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) has also been authorized for all counties within the State of Washington under the federal disaster declaration on Dec. 8, 2007. HMGP provides grants to states and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures after a major disaster declaration.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
