WICHITA, Kan. -- Free crisis counseling is available to Kansans who may be suffering stress, anxiety or depression as a result of the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding which hit the state from May 4-18.

Registration for assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is not required to access this program.

Common reactions to a disaster may include nightmares, difficulty sleeping, feelings of being overwhelmed, fear of the weather, anxiety about the future, difficulty making decisions, hopelessness, disappointment with outside help, headaches, increased anger or aggression, domestic violence, frustration and feelings of powerlessness. These symptoms can be exhibited by people of all ages.

"We should not overlook the mental stress a disaster can cause," said Michael L. Karl, federal coordinating officer for the Kansas disaster recovery. "This program can be vital to everyone who suffered, but especially children and older Kansans."

Children can be especially vulnerable to disaster-related stress effects from interruption of daily routine and loss of the stability the home environment provides.

Even individuals who experience a disaster "second hand" through exposure to extensive media coverage can be affected.

"We encourage everyone who needs assistance to take advantage of this program soon," said Angee Morgan, state coordinator for the disaster recovery.

Family counseling to overcome stress-related impact on family groups is an integral part of the program.

The State of Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services Crisis Counseling Referral Line is 1-888-582-3759.

FEMA coordinates the federal government’s role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
