COLUMBIA , Mo. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State of Missouri Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) officials continue recovery efforts for those affected by the recent severe storms, tornadoes and flooding of March 8-13 and March 30- April 3, 2006.
To date, nearly $1.5 million has been approved for Housing Assistance, including lodging expense reimbursement, repair assistance and temporary rental assistance.
In addition, more than $1.17 million has been approved for Other Needs Assistance which includes grants for personal property, vehicle losses, disaster related medical, dental and funeral expenses, moving and storage expenses as well as other expenses related to serious needs.
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved low-interest disaster loans totaling more than $6.5 million for homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes.
A total of 3,584 Missourians have applied for disaster assistance under both of Missouri 's current federal disaster declarations dated March 16 and April 5, 2006.
More than 2,315 individuals have visited Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) opened for Missouri residents who have applied for disaster assistance. DRCs are designed to provide applicants with an opportunity to discuss their needs with personnel from s tate, federal and voluntary organizations and provide recovery information about various programs available.
Locations of the DRCs currently open are:
- Pemiscot County , American Legion Hall, 716 Truman Boulevard , Caruthersville , Mo.
- Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT, until further notice.
- Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT, until further notice.
- Scott County , First Methodist Church , 1307 North Main Street , Sikeston , Mo.
- The DRC will be open Saturday and Monday through Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- The DRC will be closed Sunday.
Before coming to a Disaster Recovery Center, residents and business owners in all declared counties are encouraged to apply immediately by calling the toll-free number 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for the speech-or hearing-impaired. Telephone lines are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CDT, seven days a week. People may also apply online at http://www.fema.gov/assistance.
FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
