Washington, DC -- The following is a summary of on-going response and recovery efforts following the Aug. 10-12 storm in the District of Columbia. At close of business Aug. 30:
- 3,270 residents in the District of Columbia have registered for disaster assistance since President Bush declared the Aug. 10-12 flooding a major disaster on Aug. 16.
- Disaster housing checks totaling $2,015,380 have been issued to assist with temporary housing and minor home repairs. FEMA inspectors have completed 2,501 of inspections.
- 422 persons have visited one of the two Disaster Recovery Centers in the District seeking information concerning their disaster assistance application.
- District officials are currently processing 835 requests for Individual and Family Grant (IFG) assistance. IFG may be used to cover serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance or other programs.
- The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved $289,600 in low-interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters and businesses. The first loan checks were distributed Aug. 22.
- Twenty (20) district government agencies, including several private non-profit entities, have made requests for assistance from the FEMA/District Public Assistance program that provides funds for the repair of public facilities such as roads, bridges, public buildings and utilities, and for debris removal. Certain private non-profit organizations that operate eligible facilities may qualify for assistance.
- Disaster Unemployment Assistance is available through the Department of Employment Service for those who lost income because of the disaster. The deadline for filing an application is Sept. 21.
- 933 persons have called the FEMA Helpline (1-800-525-0321) for answers to questions about their application.
- Individuals may register for disaster assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free registration line at 1-800-462-9029 (TTY: 1-800-462-7585). While most assistance offered under government programs covers basic needs only and will not compensate individuals for their entire loss, disaster recovery programs can give a helping hand on the road to recovery.
