DATA ANALYTIC CORE LABORATORY
The goal of the HSR Data Analytic Laboratory is to provide analytic consultation and support for HSR investigators and trainees at the SF VAMC, with the long-range goal of increasing the capacity of investigators to perform important HSR studies that achieve national recognition for improving the quality of health care for older persons.
What services are provided by the Laboratory?
The analytic lab provides the following services:
  1. Biostatistical consultation. We provide biostatistical advice to investigators and their research staff. This consultation includes advice on statistical methods, software use, interpretation and presentation of results, including graphical displays.

  2. Database consultation. We provide assistance to investigators interested in research questions that can be addressed with large administrative and clinical databases. We provide advice on gaining access to these databases and on preparing retrospective cohorts from the databases in a format usable by standard statistical packages.

  3. Advice on grant proposal preparation. We advise on
    • formulation of hypotheses
    • study design choices
    • definition and measurement of variables
    • sample size calculation
    • data analytic strategies
    • writing and editing sections of the proposal.

  4. Biostatistical instruction. The Laboratory participates actively in formal and ongoing didactic sessions in biostatistical methods for HSR trainees and staff at SF VAMC .
In general, the Laboratory advises investigators and their research staff about analyses, and does not provide primary analytic services for most studies. If you need programming guidance on conducting analyses for an unfunded study that will likely lead to extramural funding, please speak with Dr. Knight or Dan Bertenthal, MPH.
Who is eligible to use services of the Data Analytic Laboratory?
All HSR investigators and trainees at the SF VAMC are eligible to request consultation and use of services from the Laboratory. Initial consultations up to an hour are available. After the initial consultation, preference for on-going advice is given to
    • HSR trainees
    • HSR&D-funded studies
    • Grant applications to HSR&D
    • Junior HSR investigators
How do I access the services provided by the laboratory?
Please contact Dr. Knight (sara.knight@va.gov) or Mr. Bertenthal to schedule an appointment. Initial consultations for up to an hour will be provided. Allocation of further resources will be made depending on availability.
