The Computer Science Branch (CSB) applies techniques of computer
and information science to problems in the representation,
retrieval and manipulation of biomedical knowledge.
CSB projects involve both basic and applied research in:
- Intelligent gateway systems
- Intelligent agent technology
- Knowledge management
- Merging thesauri and controlled vocabularies
- Data mining
- Machine-assisted indexing
Specific research targets issues of knowledge representation,
knowledge base structure, knowledge acquisition,
the human-machine interface for complex systems and developing
embedded intelligence systems that combine local reasoning with access
to large-scale online databanks.
Additionally, branch research staff are developing NLM's Gateway. They
previously developed and deployed Internet Grateful Med (IGM) and HSTAT.
Staff continue to actively develop and maintain the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) Metathesaurus.
