LANL Waste Facts

• Currently there are 21 NPDES-permitted outfalls at LANL
• Ten years ago NPDES outfalls numbered above 100
• This year they are expected to be further reduced to 17
• Eleven major material disposal areas exist at LANL where radioactive and/or hazardous waste has been disposed beginning in 1944
• Volumes disposed range from 200 cubic yards to 920,000 cubic yards
• Construction and decontamination & demolition waste from external contractors can sometimes be shipped off-site directly by the subcontractor
• Generators can be responsible for some pre-treatment of waste prior to acceptance by LANL TSDs per the LANL Waste Acceptance Criteria
