Waste TypesThe Los Alamos National Laboratory has important national missions in national security, fundamental science, and energy. Identifying, mitigating, and eliminating the environmental impacts of these missions is the goal of the Pollution Prevention Office. The Pollution Prevention Office assists the Laboratory in eliminating these sources and reducing risk through proactive pollution prevention, waste minimization, recycling, and resource conservation. Pollution prevention practices move the Laboratory beyond compliance-based goals toward zero waste produced, zero pollutants released, and zero natural resources wasted or damaged. The Pollution Prevention staff actively works to establish ongoing projects to reduce the generation of Transuranic (TRU) waste, low-level waste, mixed low-level waste, hazardous waste, sanitary waste, and other special types of waste such as TSCA and State. The Pollution Prevention staff is always willing to help with implementation of new ideas for waste reduction. |
