Special Registration for Nationals of Certain Countries
Special registration is a system administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to track the arrival and departure of non-immigrants from Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Egypt, Eritrea, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Lebanon, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Qatar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, the Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Yemen**.
It is part of the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) that is being used to strengthen the borders of the United States. Registration is required of male nationals from the designated countries and nationals from any other country that the USCIS designates.
During the registration the applicant will be fingerprinted, photographed, and interviewed either at their Port of Entry or in a local USCIS District Office. Information about the applicant's place of residence, employment or study will be collected and the registrant's passport and visa paperwork will be inspected.
The special registration process has been designed to minimize any inconvenience to the applicant and should not be a cause for concern.
**These countries are separated into four separate groups. Each group has different deadlines for completing their registration paperwork.
Group 1: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria and Sudan
Group 2: Afghanistan, Bahrain, Eritrea, Lebanon, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Qatar, Somalia, Syria, Tunisia, UAE, Yemen
Group 3: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia
