OEP 35 Airports

Much of the current delay in the aviation system can be traced to inadequate throughput at the some of the busiest airports.

Needs:

To increase the capacity, reduce delays, and improve the efficiency and safety of the 35 OEP airports.

Map of 35 OEP Airports

Operational Concept :

Construction of new airfield infrastructure such as new runways, major runway extensions, and new taxiways are currently the most effective method of increasing capacity, reducing delays, and improving efficiency and safety.

Design/Architecture:

Eight of the 35 busiest airports have a runway(s) or significant taxiway under construction. These projects will improve the flow of traffic from the en route airspace to the gate. All of these projects have completed the planning and environmental processes. The FAA will continue to work with the local community, the airport, and the airlines to ensure that these projects are completed on time with the procedures, navigational equipment, and staffing needed to realize the anticipated benefits. Six of these eight airports are also included in the 15 metropolitan areas discussed in the Metropolitan Area smart sheet.

Dependencies:

Unforeseen circumstances at the local level can impact projected opening dates.

Benefits:

The commissioning of airfield infrastructure (runways and taxiways) provides these airports with the ability to handle more arrivals and departures efficiently and reduce ground delays.
