This paper describes the discrepancies in hospital accreditation among metropolitan statistical area hospitals and non-metropolitan statistical area hospitals. It presents the reasons for many rural hospitals choosing not to pursue Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. The paper includes tables, figures, and references.
