  • Candidates must have a clinical degree (i.e., M.D., D.D.S., or an equivalent degree).
  • Individuals holding the Ph.D. degree only, without an M.D. or D.D.S. degree, or a comparable medical or dental degree from a foreign country, are not eligible for an NCRR K23 award.
  • The candidate must have an academic appointment at an institution hosting a General Clinical Research Center (GCRC).
  • The individual must have approval of the GCRC Principal Investigator and Program Director (letters in support of the application are required) to use GCRC resources to accomplish the research goals outlined in the proposal.
  • The candidate also must have a mentor who is an active GCRC-based investigator.
  • The candidate must have an interest in pursuing career development in patient-oriented research with the goal of becoming an independent clinical investigator.
  • The applicant may also wish to pursue didactic course work and/or learn sophisticated research techniques, and should address these needs in the application.
  • Applicants fulfilling these eligibility criteria should indicate their desire to have primary or secondary assignment to NCRR in a cover letter to the NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR) that should be submitted with the K23 application.
