Fact Sheet Series 2004 - Secondary and Technical Education
Archived Information

The OVAE Fact Sheet Series highlights efforts currently underway at the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) to support the principles of the President's No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The principle(s) supported by this effort are:

  • Increase Accountability and Academic Achievement
  • Increase Options and Involvement for Parents and Students
  • Increase Flexibility and Reduce Bureaucracy
  • Focus on What Works

Background

In today's economy, students must possess knowledge of technology and have the ability to use it. Technology is used in classrooms, homes, and businesses for training, project completion, research, and basic communication. In today's world, technology opens the door to many resources. These resources are readily available at one's fingertips if the individual knows how to access the information.

Overview

The purpose of the CTC program is to create or expand community technology centers that provide disadvantaged residents of economically distressed urban and rural communities access to information technology and related training. Additionally, the FY 2003 funding sought to provide supplemental instruction in reading, language arts, and mathematics for low-achieving students entering or enrolled in grades 9-12 at high-poverty, low-performing schools. The focus of the FY 2004 funding was similar.

Outcomes and Products

  • Final performance reports that document the progress of participants' achievement in state or local academic assessments
  • Use of teaching strategies that have proven effective in improving the academic achievement of low-achieving students
  • CTC's will serve as educational community resources for parents and other community members
