PCBs Workshop 2006

Zakopane, Poland
September 6-10, 2006

Description

The local organizing committee invites you to participate in a workshop dedicated to bringing together the very latest information on the chemistry and biology of the environmental pollutants, known as Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs). It is our hope that the Zakopane PCB Workshop will provide opportunity for researchers of varied backgrounds and expertise to integrate their knowledge and experience, and to apply these to questions of the detection, movement, metabolism, toxicity, remediation and risk assessment for this class of industrial chemicals and environmental pollutants, in a most scenic setting. The structure of the workshop will support interaction among researchers by having all oral presentations in plenary sessions. Speakers will be asked to provide a general and comprehensive overview of selected topics mentioning their own contributions and those of others. Poster presentations will be solicited as well. Ample time will be provided during the coffee and lunch breaks for poster viewing and discussions. NIEHS has again provided primary financial support for this Workshop, along with financial support from the Universities of Kentucky and Iowa.

Conference Objectives

Scientists from many disciplines are concerned with the physical and chemical as well as the biomedical aspects of the detection, movement, metabolism, toxicity, remediation and risk assessment of PCBs. A primary objective of this Workshop is to bring these scientists together in one location to encourage interactions and the exchange of information. An obvious example is that the analytical chemist may not quantify the congeneric PCBs the toxicologist, the epidemiologist the risk assessor hold as important. A second major goal of this Workshop is to compose a new up-to-date compendium on the very latest findings relating to the chemistry and biology of PCBs and their risk to human health. The organizing committee envisions this workshop to be an unbiased statement of the state of our knowledge and not only a summary of any one contributor's own research. It is anticipated that the product of this conference will be published in book or journal format, which will be provided after the workshop to each registrant.

Travel Support for Students and Postdocs

Students & postdocs who plan to present a poster at the PCB Workshop in Zakopane are invited to compete for travel support. Limited funds are available in the amount of US $500 per student or postdoc, up to a total of 5 successful applicants. Students & postdocs who wish to be considered for travel awards must submit an abstract by the July 15th deadline, and are asked to identify on the poster abstract that they wish to be considered for a travel award. Successful applicants will be required to present a poster in order to claim an award. A committee will evaluate all eligible abstracts and will announce the travel awards approximately one week after the deadline for abstract submission.
