Mark your page with this impressive bookmark, with images taken from Exploring the Early Americas exhibit, here at the Library of Congress. This sturdy and elegant bookmark with tassel depicts images of two of America's earliest artifacts, dating back to AD 600. At top, the Monumental Jaguar Sculpture from the Maya civilization in Mexico, depicts the jaguar, an extremely important icon in Maya cosmology, since jaguars are not only the special patrons and protectors of kings but are also the deities representing the sun in its nocturnal aspect. This particular sculpture is unusual because it is a full figure. Originally, it may have flanked the throne of a Maya lord or king. Below, is the Vessel with Maya Scribes was created of ceramic in the Guatamalan lowlands by the Mayan. This vessel, from the heartland of Maya civilization in Northern Guatemala, is decorated by a limited palette (red, black, and cream) and is devoted to a scribal theme. The figures on the vessel are a human scribe and the god of scribes, Itzam, identified as such by iconic imagery and glyphs.
