Tuesday, December 23, 2008 USDOT Agrees to $516 Million Loan to Construct Inter-County Connector WWASHINGTON -- Maryland's plans for congestion relief near Washington, D.C., got a boost from the U.S. Department of Transportation through its approval of a $516 million loan for the Inter-County Connector. "The ICC will make the commute easier for drivers who suffer each day through some of the most congested highways in the nation," said Federal Highway Administrator Tom Madison. The Office of Operations launched a new Tolling and Pricing Program Web site. In an effort to create a more user friendly experience when searching for information about federal pricing programs, the new site includes valuable information that was once included on three separate sites: the Tolling and Pricing Opportunities, the Value Pricing Pilot Program (VPPP) and the VPPP site on the Knowledge Exchange. This is just the first step in streamlining information on one of the critical FHWA programs. In the future, the site will also feature a subject index that will help the user find the subjects they are looking for quickly instead of searching the entire site. SAFETEA-LU

Meeting Environmental Requirements After a Bridge Collapse
Two months after the August 1, 2007 collapse of Minnesota's Interstate 35 West (I-35W) Bridge, Minnesota's Department of Transportation (MnDOT) entered into a contract for a new bridge design and construction. The startling speed of the environmental review process and contract decision demonstrated that, in emergencies, the timeframe can be reduced dramatically, from several years to several months, without compromising environmental standards or safety. MnDOT held the reconstruction project to the same standards required for any transportation project of similar scope and scale. Find out more in the January issue of "Successes in Stewardship".
