Objectives

The objectives for this module are:

  • The student will understand the maternal and fetal consequences of shoulder dystocia
  • The student will understand the risk factors of shoulder dystocia
  • The student will understand the management options for shoulder dystocia

Shoulder dystocia (Basket) is a true obstetric emergency (Bennett) that all birth attendants will encounter during their careers.  Occurring in 0.6% to 1.4% of births, shoulder dystocia requires a trained team for appropriate relief to minimize fetal injury.  Shoulder dystocia is difficult to predict, and several maneuvers have been used to relieve an impacted anterior shoulder.  This module will review risk factors and management options (Romoff) for shoulder dystocia.
