About Peter Stuart, MD

Dr. Peter Stuart, MD is a Civil Service Medical Officer in Psychiatry serving Navajo Area Indian Health Service. He is board certified in Psychiatry by the National Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the National Association for Rural Mental Health.

He spent well over a decade as the Chinle Service Unit Counseling Department Director and CSU Chief of Psychiatry. During that time he promoted the design, development and implementation of the RPMS Behavioral Health modules and continues to serve as an advisor to integration efforts. He led the national Suicide Prevention Committee during its initial years. He has more recently become involved in supporting the roll-out and implementation of the Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention (ASBI) program, an injury prevention effort intended to reduce ER recidivism. He has worked closely with tribal programs to develop BH programming in a number of areas including helping to establish and develop one of the first Indian country juvenile detention facilities.

His current interests include the development of comprehensive Behavioral Health systems of care that are well integrated with medical systems of care, reduction of trauma in AI/AN communities, suicide prevention,  incorporating care into culture and collaborations with traditional healers and healing systems, and leveraging the use of technology to improve access and coordination of care.

He currently provides telepsychiatry-based care and consultation to the Chinle and Kayenta Service Units on Navajo.

He loves sweats.

He can be reached by phone or email.
