In the Wave Runup Analysis program, when a mean wave height value is manually entered into the Setup window, this value will default back to the mean wave height calculated from the significant wave height entered in the General program - Parameters window. The solution is to re-enter the wave height each time in the Wave Runup Analysis program, Setup window before running the RUNUP 2.0 program itself.
Multiple 'Total 100-year SWEL' lines appear in the Wave Height Analysis program graphic when the '1% SWEL' or 'Wave Setup Magnitude' values are changed in the General program - Parameters window. The solution is to thaw the 'TOTAL_SW' layer in the Summary Tables and Graphics for Mapping program (Program 6), and then select and delete the incorrect ‘Total 100-year SWEL’ lines in the actual graphic.
Since the 1970s, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has routinely established and updated standard methodologies for performing coastal hazard assessments of fine-scale wave phenomena associated with hurricane storm surges or northeaster flooding effects. These methodologies include storm-induced erosion treatments, wave height analyses, and wave runup analyses.
CHAMP is a Microsoft (MS) Windows-interfaced Visual Basic language program that allows the user to enter data, perform coastal engineering analyses, view and tabulate results, and chart summary information for each representative transect along a coastline within a user-friendly graphical interface. With CHAMP, the user can import digital elevation data, perform storm-induced erosion treatments, wave height and wave runup analyses, plot summary graphics of the results, and create summary tables and reports in a single environment.
CHAMP, Version 2.0 is an UPDATE to CHAMP, Version 1.2. Directions are provided below for both current and new users of CHAMP. CHAMP, Version 2.0 includes the following enhancements:
Capability to model the 0.2% annual chance event (500-year) has been added to CHAMP. New inputs for the 500-year event include wave height, wave period, and wave setup. Erosion for the 500-year event is based on a dune reservoir of 1030 square feet. See Procedure Memorandum 47 for additional guidance on coastal modeling of the 0.2% annual chance flood.
Added a user option under the Transect menu to round all station numbers to the whole foot. Once this function is executed, the decimal numbers cannot be recovered. Also all tables will now display the entire station number without rounding.
The option to input different wind speeds for the OF, IF, and VH cards other then the default has been added to CHAMP under the General parameters tab.
Corrected the calculation of the dune-eroded volume when a dune retreat case is encountered. Also, fields were added to the Erosion program to show the value of the total eroded area and the Eroded area above the stillwater.
An error message will now display when the eroded profile slope does not intersect the ground profile.
CHAMP will now automatically inset points in the profile where the total stillwater intersects the ground profile when the WHAFIS table is populated. Note that the inserted points are only made based on the starting total stillwater elevation input into the General Parameters tab. If a change of total stillwater is made along the profile such as a reduction to a backbay stillwater or reduction of wave setup new ground intersection points will need to be inserted.
CHAMP will now remove duplicate station points when the WHAFIS table is populated. Duplicate stations in the WHAFIS model causes the WHAFIS model to crash.
The starting total stillwater values that are populated on the IE card of WHAFIS can no longer be changed from the WHAFIS table. They can only be edited under the General Parameters tab. This avoids confusion of where to edit the values and maintains consistency within CHAMP.
The spelling text for two marsh grass (VH card) region types have been revised to match the spelling in the FEMA Coastal Guidelines and Specification documents. "Mid Atlantic" has been revised to be "Mid-Atlantic" and "North East Gulf Mexico" has been revised to "Northeastern Gulf."
WHAFIS now has the capability to record comment lines in the input file as well as the output file. This feature for input has been added to CHAMP in the WHAFIS table for input of the CM comment line and the PS comment line.
The WHAFIS500 help file has been added under the CHAMP help menu.
The 2% wave runup value will now be calculated by CHAMP and displayed next to the average runup value in the RUNUP program.
The CHAMP internal MS Access database has been upgraded to work with Access versions up to Access 2003.
The minimum requirements for installing and running CHAMP are:
IBM compatible PC computer (a 100 MHz or higher processor is recommended)
MS Windows 95, 98, NT, ME, 2000 or XP operating system
The CHAMP, Version 2.0 User's Manual contains the instructions and specifications needed to run the program successfully. Prior to running CHAMP, Version 2.0 for the first time, users should take the time to read this manual.
The full CHAMP, Version 2.0 program can be downloaded in a single WinZip file from the FEMA Library below, along with information on how to install the software. After downloading the file from the FEMA Library, you can then extract the WinZip file to a local directory (e.g., C:\temp) on your computer's hard drive.

Installing CHAMP
Open the WinZip archive(s) and extract the files to a local directory on your computer's hard drive. (NOTE: When using WinZip to unzip the file(s), be sure that the "Use Folder Names" checkbox is checked so that the original folder structure of the files is preserved on your local system. All of the CHAMP files must be extracted to the same directory for the program to install properly on your system.)
Click on "Setup.exe" to run the program file. For users of previous versions of CHAMP, this setup will overwrite versions of CHAMP that were previously installed. (NOTE: Windows 2000 users will be prompted with the option to install CHAMP for the primary user's profile or for all machine users. Select the radio button of choice, depending on your preference, and click "OK" to continue.)
Follow the on-screen directions to install the program. The default directory is C:\Program Files\CHAMP\. (NOTE: You may be prompted with the following message: "1207: Windows(R) Installer 1.10.1029.0 found. This is an older version of the Windows(R) Installer. Click "OK" to continue." If you receive this prompt, click "Ok" to continue and the program will install successfully, despite the message. Depending on your operating system and configuration, you may be required to reboot your system one or two times during the install process.)
Click "Start" and then point to "Programs." Locate the CHAMP folder and click on the program name to start CHAMP, Version 2.0.
