Setback

NFIP Policy Index

Definition/Description:

Setbacks may be used to keep development out of harm's way. Setback standards establish minimum distances that structures must be positioned (or set back) from river channels and coastal shorelines. Setbacks can be defined by vertical heights or horizontal distances. Setbacks are not required by the NFIP. The Community Rating System (CRS) credits setbacks under Higher Regulatory Standards, Special Hazards Regulations.
