Aussies Adopt the PHS Guidelines

The Australian Health Minister’s Advisory Committee on HIV and STI endorsed the Department of Health and Human Services’ Guidelines for the Use of Antiretroviral Agents in HIV-1 Infected Adults and Adolescents and adopted them, with written commentary, as their own.

The Australian panel provided three levels of commentary to help Australians adopt the U.S. guidelines:

·         The first commentary was procedural and involved translating terms, contacts, and the like to Australasian equivalents.

·         The second involved a number of minor variations or differences of opinion and/or data.

·         The third related to substantive issues that will be discussed at the 1st Australasian Consensus Conference on Management of HIV, which will be held August 24 – 27, 2005, in Hobart, Tasmania. Copies of the commentary are located at the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine (ASHM) conference Web site.

Modafinil Treatment for Fatigue in HIV+ Patients

Fatigue can be a debilitating problem for people living with HIV/AIDS and can exhibit its effects as weakness, muscle pain, impaired memory and mental concentration, or insomnia. Any of these symptoms can severely diminish a person’s quality of life. A clinical trial sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) will evaluate whether modafinil (Provigil®), a medication approved for the treatment of narcolepsy, is effective in reducing fatigue in adults with HIV/AIDS. Get the details at: http://ClinicalTrials.gov/show/NCT00118378.
