Issue No. 25

August 5, 2005

AIDSinfo.nih.gov is pleased to provide you with a weekly update of highlights about what has happened in the world of HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention, and research. We hope you find this encapsulated view of HIV/AIDS news useful.

3rd IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment

The International AIDS Society (IAS) hosted the 3rd IAS conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, July 24–27. The conference brought together researchers and clinicians to address current issues in HIV research, prevention, and treatment. Some of the highlights of the conference included:

·         A spotlight on Brazil’s example of global leadership in the fight against HIV/AIDS

·         Presentation of a record number of scientific studies

·         An announcement by Japan’s Ono Pharmaceutical that GlaxoSmithKline has begun Phase III trials of its investigational antiretroviral called GSK 873140.

HIV/AIDS and Nutrition

For people living with HIV/AIDS, good nutrition plays a key role in staying healthy. Nutrition therapy, in combination with the appropriate antiretroviral treatment regimen, can extend and improve the quality and quantity of life. Here are some helpful dietary suggestions:

·         Have high-calorie protein drinks or shakes. Adding powdered milk can increase the nutrition in other drinks

·         Drink 8 to 10 glasses of filtered water each day

·         Keep nutritious snacks on hand

·         Eat high-calorie foods if you're losing weight

·         Call your doctor if you lose 5 pounds or more when you didn't want to

·         Talk to your doctor about taking a multivitamin every day. Take your multivitamin with a meal so your stomach won't get upset
