HIV/AIDS and Nutrition
For people
living with HIV/AIDS, good nutrition plays a key role in staying healthy.
Nutrition therapy, in combination with the appropriate antiretroviral treatment
regimen, can extend and improve the quality and quantity of life. Here are some
helpful dietary suggestions: ·
Have
high-calorie protein drinks or shakes. Adding powdered milk can increase the
nutrition in other drinks ·
Drink 8
to 10 glasses of filtered water each day ·
Keep
nutritious snacks on hand ·
Eat
high-calorie foods if you're losing weight ·
Call
your doctor if you lose 5 pounds or more when you didn't want to ·
Talk to
your doctor about taking a multivitamin every day. Take your multivitamin with
a meal so your stomach won't get upset For additional resources, check out the AIDS Education and Training Center’s Health Care and HIV: Nutritional Guide for Providers and Clients (http://www.aidsetc.org/aidsetc?page=et-30-20-01), The Nutrition and Exercise page of the National Library of Medicine’s Specialized Information Services (SIS) Web site (http://sis.nlm.nih.gov/hiv/nutrition.html), the HRSA CareAction publication issue on Nutrition (http://hab.hrsa.gov/publications/aug04/), and the USDA Web site’s Food and Nutrition Center (http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/etext/000062.html).ClinicalTrials.gov Info
